Currency options are a more complex and interesting way of dealing in the Forex market, Options offer less risk to good, highly experienced traders.

Option contracts on currencies work in the same way as stock options, in their simplest form, they grant the buyer the right to buy or sell at a specific, fixed price in the future which is called the Strike Price. Option trading offers the opportunity to profit from specific setups in the market by risking less capital. Unlike futures contracts the risk is limited, at least as an options buyer the risk is limited to the premium paid. All in all when comparing futures and options in the currency market we can see these differences:

Currency options offer less risk for a number of specific entry trades, futures are tricky to use and even trickier to place their ideal stop loss orders.
Option contracts are more versatile than the simplistic nature of futures.
Option contracts allow you to profit from static markets, even from a currency pair which stays almost flat for many days.

It is not uncommon for currency traders to make extraordinary profits out of small movements in the underlying currency pairs, some others even combine futures and options contracts together. It is important to know that unlike the dollar for dollar mechanism of futures, options work in a different way, their price is greatly affected by volatility and time to expiration. Currency option traders buy when volatility is low and sell when volatility is high, they don’t just look at the underlying currency’s direction.

So this mechanism allows for making big profits out of small market moves.

Of course currency options are priced by complex formulas, to make big money in options one has to have mastered futures trading beforehand, and then expand to options.

What is required is a thorough understanding of volatility, profit margin and the ability to buy at discounted premiums, otherwise it will be hard to even break even on the trade.
